Why Positive Role Models are Necessary for Children

Children are faced with many things throughout their lives. While we as parents try to shield our children from as many negative things as we can. Unfortunately it is not always possible to protect children from every negative or unpleasant issue in life nor is it a good thing to do so. This is where positive role models and influences come into play.

As children grow and learn they look to the adults in their life for cues on how to behave and what is acceptable. These role models are not always necessarily the parents but can be anyone who has substantial contact with the child. Because children are so perceptive they tend to act as little sponges and absorb huge amounts of information when they are very young. This of course means that the people your child comes into contact will shape them into the person they will eventually become. This is why it is so important to make sure that the influences your child encounters are positive ones.

Over time children begin to develop their own sense of self. The people they come into contact with throughout their lives helps to determine many things including attitude, self-perception and personality. Once these traits are developed they are very difficult if not impossible to change. This is why it is extremely important to have as many positive influences as possible in the life of your child.

When a child grows up with negativity or disruption this also plays a huge role in the type of person that they will become. Children who grow up in this type of environment are faced with many obstacles that could be avoided. Some common issues that could become a factor in this situation include a child becoming ill-tempered, malicious and arrogant. These are not good traits in anyone particularly in a child.

Most people will agree that the best way to raise children to be contributing members of society is by providing positive influences throughout their lives. There are many children who have grown to have serious problems in life simply because of the influences that they encountered as a child. It is the role of the parents to ensure that this does not happen. Think of yourself as a child. Now think of the people that influenced you while you were growing up. Were your role models good ones? Now think of what you want for your children.

It is also important that you teach your children that it is okay for them to make mistakes. You should also teach them however the importance of learning from those mistakes. When your child does make a mistake talk to them about it and ask them what they learned from this mistake and how they can prevent making the same mistake again. Children understand more than we think and when we talk to them we help them to understand even more.
